European Cup (2nd leg) - York Cycle Show - 23/24th June '07
For the second year running, Oakenden attended the CTC York Cycle
Show, this time as organisers (with help from the BPAI) of the 2nd leg of the 2007 European Cup. 6 teams attended (Oakenden,
ESGL, St Pierre,
Dublin, Sanvic and Johnstone). Jaff, Andy, Martin, Nicky and
Gaz took the drive north to represent Oakenden. Unfortunately heavy rain had fallen for a month beforehand so the pitches
were not in the best condition, but the location of the event more than made up for it.
First up was ESGL. Unfortunately for them (but fortunately
for the rest of us!) ESGL were only able to bring over a team of 4 from Paris
and the 5 players of Oakenden took early advantage when 2 goals from Gaz gave them a 2-0 lead. We missed a good chance to
go 3 up when a foul on Gaz was called only 15 metres out when we had an advantage as Gaz had ridden the tackle and was 1 on
1 with the keeper. Unfortunately we couldn’t make our extra man count any further and ESGL were able to get back into
the game with 2 goals in the 2nd half to draw the game 2-2. Overall, we had played ok and probably should have won the
game. Next up was St Pierre and the eventual runners up certainly
burst our bubble with a convincing 11-0 victory! Dublin were
next to put us to the sword – this time by 8 goals to nil. Our fourth game was against Sanvic, the winners of
the previous tournament in Dublin. I am pleased to report
that we scored the goal of the tournament. Unfortunately though it wasn’t in our opponents goal. Sanvic had cruised
into a 3-0 lead. We had cleared further danger with Andy dribbling the ball out of defence towards the right hand wing, about
35 – 40 meters from our goal. Andy was being closed down by 2 Sanvic players, he looked up and seeing nothing was on
hit a backhand shot. The trouble was that he hit the shot with such power that it flew the full 40 metres into the top left
hand corner of our goal while still rising. I heard afterwards that a man had caught the ball while standing on the roof of
York Minster! Anyway, the goal got its deserved ovation from spectators and players from both sides! This encouraged us enough
to get a goal back, when Jaff planted a peach past the Sanvic keeper. Unfortunately, Sanvic again raised their game and ran
out convincing 6-1 winners. Last up was Johnstone. Martin scored a cracking goal in this one but unfortunately it was
nowhere near enough to prevent Johnstone running out 8-1 winners. In a very exciting final Sanvic beat St Pierre 2-1 with a very late goal to take home the winners trophy, and thoroughly deserved
it was too. All in all, this was a great event, thoroughly enjoyable but very hard work to both organise and play in.
